EGBC Technical Workshop – Session 2: Retrofitting HVAC Systems

In line with EGBC’s new series of technical workshops, the 2nd technical workshop will be held on 2 May 2012 in EGBC office, the topic for which is Retrofitting HVAC Systems. The workshop will take the form of a round table discussion, where experts will discuss on several issues related to the topic.  Focused discussion will revolve around questions such as 1) what are the simplest, most cost-effective HVAC solutions for improving the (environmental, financial & comfort) performance of existing buildings, 2) What are the benchmarks for HVAC system performance, and 3) what are the alternative/future technologies coming to the market. EmiratesGBC Focus Day – Constructing Buildings for the Future
Abu Dhabi, 25 April 2012, 10:00am - 5:00pm

EmiratesGBC is hosting its 2nd focus day of the year in conjunction with the World ecoConstruct in Abu Dhabi on 25 April. The theme for the focus day is “Constructing Buildings for the Future“, where Abu Dhabi government officials will discuss the evolution of Estidama over the past year. Focusing on the green economy, an important initiative of the UAE federal government, those attending the Focus Day will hear the perspective of the developer and contractor on the use of rating systems . Giving practical examples, the contractor and suppliers will talk about the use of innovative products used in making the building sustainable, and will also highlight the key issue of waste management and the strategies adopted to tackle construction waste on the site. All the sessions will be followed by a panel discussion, where the eminent speakers will discuss the concept of eco cities and its affordability, and the restrictions faced by people to adopt the concept of building green.

EGBC Technical Workshop – Session 1: Waste Water Treatment and Re-Use

EmiratesGBC is delighted to announce a series of technical workshops for its members and partners. The  1st technical workshop will be held on 4 April 2012 in EGBC office, the topic for which is Waste Water Treatment and Re-Use. The format of the workshop is a round table discussion, where experts will discuss on several issues related to the topic.  The aim of these technical workshops are to join together members from across the Building industry to share their knowledge of a topical subject and explore how the council and its members can influence improvement across the industry. The outputs from these workshops will be publicized across the membership, on the EGBC website and with summaries issued through media partners. An important part of the output is recommendations for key stakeholders in the region and industry for positive action and the next steps for the EGBC and its members. Green Building Tour and Workshop
Dubai, 28 March 2012, 9:00 – 11:00am
Dubai Chamber of Commerce building (2nd floor)

Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry is hosting a Green Building Tour and Workshop exclusively for the members of EmiratesGBC on 28th March 2012 from 9:00am to 11:00pm.  The Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry building is the 1st LEED EBOM in the Arab world and 4th outside of North America. The agenda of the tour will include viewing the green building efforts implemented in the renovated building as well as several pioneering green features.  A detailed discussion on the key issues observed during the tour will follow the tour with tips for greening other existing buildings. Space is limited to only 60 people, so please RSVP no later than 25th March 2012.

EmiratesGBC Focus Day – Energy Efficiency of Existing Buildings
Abu Dhabi, 17 January 2012, 1:00 - 5:00pm
ADNEC, Capital Suite 1

It is widely recognized that making significant reductions in carbon emissions from the building sector will require considerable improvement to the energy efficiency of the existing stock. With this in mind, the Emirates Green Building Council will hold a half day Focus Day on 17 January co-located with the World Future Energy Summit at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC).  The theme of the Focus Day is Energy Efficiency of Existing Buildings in the UAE. Guests and speakers will take a close look at the ‘Why’ and ‘How’ of prioritizing existing buildings in the UAE to be more energy efficient.  Through case studies presented, implementation as well as challenges will be discussed that can provide insight on the importance and practical course of action to undertake for existing buildings.  Contact EmiratesGBC for more information: events@emiratesgbc.org or

EmiratesGBC Annual General Meeting 2011
Dubai, 17 November 2011, 12:30-4:00

EmiratesGBC held its Annual General Meeting on Thursday, November 17.  All members were invited to attend the meeting and participate in networking opportunities with fellow council members over lunch. Those who attended heard from the chairman, Mr. Adnan Sharafi, about the council’s growth and accomplishments of 2011.  Dr. Sadek Owainati, EmiratesGBC co-founder, updated members on the happenings of the WorldGBC, the MENA Network, and LEED International.  Members also got an update on the financials from Mrs. Habiba Al Marashi, EmiratesGBC co-founder and treasurer and finally an overview of the 2012 plan from Mr. Saeed Alabbar, EmiratesGBC vice chairman.  Members voiced their opinion, satisfaction and concerns with the council. The AGM was an opportunity to share the results of the recent Member Questionnaire and also to gain further input on member expectations.

Life Cycle Costing Seminar
Dubai, October 27 9:00am – 1:00pm

The Emirates Green Building Council hosted a seminar on Life Cycle Costing to members on Thursday, October 27 at the EGBC office in Dubai. The seminar was coordinated in partnership with the Corporate Sustainability Capacity Building Program of the John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement at the American University in Cairo (AUC) and led by Dr. Ahmed Hassanein. The seminar covered economics of sustainability, types of engineering economic analysis, time value of money, cash flow analysis, and components of life cycle.  Particularly looking at Life Cycle Costing in Construction, methodologies and applications were discussed in detail.

Net Zero Emissions Building Design
Dubai, July 20 Time 10:30am – 1:00pm

Emirates Green Building Council hosted a 2-hour seminar 'Net Zero Emissions Building Design' on 20th July 2011 for 40 of its members at the EGBC Office in Dubai. In association with Alive2Green, EGBC hosted international guest speakers from HOK of the US to discuss a case study using integrated design for a net zero emissions building.

Presentation by HOK (Colin Rohlfing, Sustainable Design Leader & Megan Holder, Associate, Landscape Designer)

Presenters Colin Rohlfing HOK Sustainable Design Leader) and Megan Holder (HOK Associate, Landscape Designer) presented the process and the detailed energy calculations that resulted in a carbon neutral design on a challenging site. The seminar also addressed how the process and strategies can be replicated or changed for different sites and climate zones and utility grids. Click here to download a copy of the presentation.

Sustainability in the Construction Industry
Dubai, July 9   9:00am – 5:15pm

The Emirates Green Building Council held a free seminar on Sustainability in the Construction Industry on Thursday, June 9 at the EGBC office.  The seminar was held in partnership with the Corporate Sustainability Capacity Building Program of the John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement at the American University in Cairo (AUC).  The seminar was the first of many anticipated joint seminars promoting the integration of sustainability principles within the construction sector.

EGBC Green Building Forum and Tour
Dubai, April 6 2011 Time - 9:30am – 3:30pm

In partnership with the Dubai Chamber, EmiratesGBC are hosting a one-day seminar "Building a Sustainable Future on 23 March 2011" at the Dubai Chamber JAFZA Branch. Seminar attendees will gain valuable knowledge on how sustainable development and operation can maximize financial savings for their own businesses. They will see how a value-based approach to building green can achieve positive, predictable results and understand how the LEED program has been used for achieving higher building efficiency and cost savings. The seminar will be delivered in an interactive manner with case studies and an onsite visit to a LEED Platinum building.

EGBC Focus Day – Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, March 30 2011 Time - 9:30am – 4pm

EmiratesGBC, through the Abu Dhabi Focus Day being held at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre on 30 March 2011, will take a close look at the application and implementation of green building regulations, guidelines and assessment tools in Abu Dhabi. The one-day conference is being held in conjunction with Arabian Construction Week. The Focus Day will serve as a forum to discuss the course of action needed to successfully undertake the design of sustainable buildings and to meet the local green building requirements. Abu Dhabi regulators who have developed the guidelines will address the participants followed by discussions from industry experts engaged in pilot projects and case studies in which local guidelines and assessment tools are being applied. This Focus Day is a must for developers, consultants, contractors and suppliers in Abu Dhabi and the region who need to understand the latest green building tools and local requirements.
